NEW YORK — A federal grand jury in Brooklyn has indicted a 57-year-old Russian woman, Svetlana Dali, following her arrest for stowing away on a flight from New York to Paris. The charge she faces carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.

Dali’s troubles began in early December when she was apprehended after being sent back to the U.S. a week post her discovery on a Delta Air Lines flight that departed from JFK International Airport on November 26, bound for Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Upon her return to the U.S., authorities re-arrested her on December 16 in Buffalo. This arrest occurred after she allegedly attempted to cross into Canada, having removed a GPS device that had been attached to her after her initial release on bail in New York. Following this second arrest, Dali has been held at the federal detention facility in Brooklyn.

Her public defender chose not to provide any comments regarding the case on Monday.

Dali’s incident is part of a series of concerning security breaches at airports across the country. Over the past month, there have been several instances in which individuals hidden in plane wheel wells were discovered deceased. Dali herself was one of two stowaway cases reported in November and December. Additionally, an unusual occurrence involved a passenger who opened an emergency door while a plane was taxiing in Boston just last week.

Experts have indicated that various issues, such as a lack of air traffic controllers and outdated aircraft tracking technology, are impacting the overall safety in air travel. However, they also emphasize that despite these challenges, over three million passengers manage to arrive at their destinations safely each day, and the last fatal commercial aviation accident in the U.S. was recorded in 2009.
