Last-place Monza stuns Fiorentina in Serie A match

0

Monza achieved a significant victory in Serie A by defeating the visitors, Fiorentina, with a scoreline of 2-1 on Monday. This marks Monza’s second win in the league and their first triumph since October, effectively ending a challenging five-match losing spree. While the team remains at the bottom of the Serie A rankings, this win has narrowed the gap to second-from-bottom Venezia to just one point.

Fiorentina, entering the match in sixth place, had the opportunity to surpass Juventus in the standings but fell short. Monza’s Patrick Ciurria gave his team a critical advantage just two minutes before halftime by capitalizing on a loose ball and driving it into the net with his left foot. This goal is particularly noteworthy as Ciurria has struggled with injuries throughout the season, making it his first goal of the current campaign.

Following halftime, Fiorentina substituted Albert Gudmundsson for Lucas Beltran, who soon found himself in a precarious position when his shot was heroically cleared off the line nearly ten minutes into the second half. However, Beltran did manage to find the back of the net with a penalty kick as the match entered its final stages. This goal, notable as it was for Fiorentina, came shortly after Daniel Maldini had extended Monza’s lead with his own goal.
