MANCHESTER, England — Renowned England cricket legend James Anderson has decided to extend his cricketing career by signing a one-year deal with Lancashire, a move announced on Monday.
This upcoming season will mark the fast bowler’s 25th in first-class cricket.
At 42 years old, Anderson holds the record as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker with an impressive total of 704 wickets. He ranks third on the global list, trailing only Australian icon Shane Warne (708) and Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan (800). Anderson stepped away from international cricket in July of the previous year.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Anderson stated, “I am incredibly excited to sign this contract with Lancashire and resume playing professional cricket again next season.” He added that he has been dedicated to maintaining his fitness and has continued bowling regularly while coaching the England team during the winter, with the goal of being ready to perform well when the county season kicks off in April.
Having made his debut with Lancashire back in 2001, the club has confirmed that Anderson has committed to an initial one-season contract, allowing him to participate in both the County Championship and English Twenty20 competitions.
Known for his remarkable skill and precision, Anderson will be looking to boost his already impressive tally of 1,126 first-class wickets. His standout performance in a match saw him take 11 wickets for 71 runs, while his best innings figures stand at 7 for 19.
Anderson reflected on his long-standing relationship with the club, saying, “This club has played a huge part in my life since I was a teenager, so to have the opportunity to wear the Red Rose again and help the side in both red and white-ball cricket is one that I am really looking forward to.”
