BERLIN — On Monday, Germany’s Foreign Minister expressed her happiness upon the release of Nahid Taghavi, a German-Iranian rights advocate, from imprisonment in Iran, leading to her return to Germany.

Annalena Baerbock took to social media platform X to share her joy, stating it was “a significant moment of happiness” to see Taghavi finally with her family once again.

In a tweet, Baerbock shared a message from Taghavi’s daughter, Mariam Claren, who celebrated her mother’s release by posting a heartfelt photo of their reunion. Claren’s message read: “It’s finished. Nahid is free! After more than four years as a political prisoner in the Islamic Republic of Iran, my mother Nahid Taghavi has been freed and is now back in Germany.”

The German Foreign Office also expressed satisfaction over Taghavi’s release, acknowledging that her ordeal had ended and emphasizing the importance of her reunion with family.

The ministry noted that both Taghavi and her family had faced unimaginable struggles, highlighting the German government’s efforts that were instrumental in facilitating her long-awaited release.

Taghavi had been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 10 years and eight months in Iran in 2021.

Human rights organization Amnesty International, which campaigned for Taghavi’s freedom for several years, celebrated her release in a statement released on Monday, noting that “after over 1,500 days in arbitrary detention, Iranian-German women’s rights activist Nahid Taghavi has been set free.”

The statement mentioned that since her detention, Amnesty International had advocated for her unconditional release and the cessation of her persecution, adding that Taghavi returned to Germany on Sunday.

Taghavi was arrested in October 2020 while visiting Tehran, facing charges related to involvement with an “illegal group” and for “propaganda against the state.” Amnesty International reported that she endured months of incommunicado detention and torture during her imprisonment.
