ABUJA, Nigeria — An airstrike conducted by the Nigerian military, aimed at armed groups in the northwest region plagued by conflict, resulted in the unintended deaths of several civilians involved with community security organizations, as reported by local authorities and residents. This incident marks the third time in just over a year that military airstrikes have led to civilian casualties during operations against extremist and rebel factions.

The Nigerian air force concentrated its efforts on insurgents within the Zurmi and Maradun regions of Zamfara state, according to a statement made by Sulaiman Bala Idris, the spokesperson for the state governor. “Unfortunately, some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes were caught up in the operation in Tungar Kara, ultimately leading to loss of life,” Idris mentioned, explaining that these individuals were “mistakenly identified as fleeing bandits.”

While officials refrained from disclosing the precise number of civilian casualties, local resident Salisu Maradun reported that approximately 20 bodies were accounted for, with an additional 10 individuals receiving treatment for injuries stemming from the airstrike. In response to the tragic loss of life, the air force announced that it would conduct an investigation into the matter and has committed to reducing risks to civilians and civilian assets. “The safety and well-being of all Nigerians is our top priority in our operations,” they stated.

In contrast, the Zamfara state government referred to the airstrike as “successful,” claiming it effectively targeted bandit activity. The government further asserted, “We will persist in our support to enhance intelligence sharing, bolster logistics, and strengthen community engagement to combat these threats.”

The Nigerian military frequently carries out aerial strikes to confront extremist groups that have caused significant instability in the northern parts of the country. However, since 2017, these operations have reportedly resulted in the deaths of around 400 civilians, according to research from the Lagos-based firm SBM Intelligence. In one notable incident in December 2023, over 80 civilians lost their lives during a religious gathering in Kaduna state due to a similar misfire. Following this, in May 2024, the military announced that two personnel would face court martial proceedings related to the incident, though findings of the investigation have yet to be disclosed, prompting criticism from human rights organizations concerning the lack of transparency in the military’s operations and conduct.
