ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — In an impressive display, Britain & Ireland triumphed over Continental Europe, concluding the Team Cup with a score of 17-8. This competition provided European golfers with crucial experience in matchplay, setting the stage for the upcoming Ryder Cup set to take place in New York later this year.
Tommy Fleetwood emerged as the key player, securing the definitive point that ensured the anticipated victory for Britain & Ireland. The team had taken a commanding lead of 11-4 going into the singles matches on Sunday after showcasing dominance on the course at the Abu Dhabi Golf Resort throughout the first two days.
With only two additional points needed from the singles matches, Laurie Canter finished strong against Romain Langasque, winning 5&4, paving the way for Fleetwood to defeat Matthieu Pavon 3&1. Notably, Fleetwood had previously clinched the winning point for Europe by defeating the United States near Rome to reclaim the Ryder Cup in 2023.
Reflecting on the experience, Fleetwood expressed his satisfaction, noting the different circumstances this time but reiterating the thrill of being part of the team. He praised the camaraderie among teammates and commended their captain.
Justin Rose, the captain for Britain & Ireland, conveyed his strategy to his players before their matches, encouraging them to adopt an aggressive approach and maintain relentless pressure as they competed in waves. His team responded effectively, winning five out of the initial six matches. Remarkable performances included Tyrrell Hatton’s victory over Thorbjorn Olesen 3&1, Rose winning over Julien Guerrier 3&2, and Paul Waring triumphing against Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 4&3.
Rose shared his appreciation for the challenge and the overall experience of captaincy, giving credit to the players for his effective leadership. Continental Europe, which had emerged victorious in the previous event two years ago, rallied towards the end with wins by Niklas Norgaard, Antoine Rozner, and Matteo Manassero. The final matches between Francesco Molinari and Jordan Smith, as well as Rasmus Hojgaard and Aaron Rai, resulted in ties.
Historically, the event known as The Seve Trophy has been contested eight times from 2000 to 2013, with Britain & Ireland claiming six victories while Continental Europe took two wins. This year, among the 20 players and captains in the current edition, six were part of the team competing in the Ryder Cup later this year.
The 2023 Ryder Cup is scheduled for September at the renowned Bethpage Black course.
