LOGAN, Utah — Ian Martinez delivered a pivotal 4-point play with just seven seconds remaining, leading the No. 25 Utah State to a thrilling 81-79 victory over Boise State on Saturday night. This win marked Utah State’s sixth consecutive triumph.
Boise State initially took the lead with a 3-pointer from Alvaro Cardenas with 9.3 seconds left, pushing the score to 79-77. However, Martinez quickly responded by sinking a 3-pointer and converting a free throw, ultimately securing the win for the Aggies.
Martinez’s impressive performance included scoring 18 points, helping Utah State improve to 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the Mountain West Conference. The team’s efforts were further bolstered by Deyton Albury with 14 points, Drake Allen contributing 13 points, Dexter Akanno adding 12, and Mason Falslev rounding out the scoring with 10 points.
For Boise State, Tyson Degenhart led the charge with 22 points, while Cardenas added 15 points along with eight assists, showcasing his playmaking ability.
In terms of momentum, Utah State faced a tough start to the second half, falling behind by 13 after a 9-0 run from Boise State. Nevertheless, the Aggies demonstrated resilience, hitting 7 of their 8 attempts from beyond the arc in the second half to claw their way back into the game.
Looking ahead, Boise State is scheduled to host Wyoming on Tuesday night, whereas Utah State will travel to face UNLV on Wednesday night.
