In a triumphant homecoming, Azzi Fudd led the seventh-ranked UConn women’s basketball team to a 73-55 victory over Georgetown on Saturday, contributing 21 points. Fudd, a redshirt junior who hails from just 15 minutes away from Georgetown’s campus, showcased her skills by sinking five 3-pointers and shooting 8-for-13 from the field.
Alongside Fudd, Sarah Strong played a significant role for UConn, scoring 16 points and securing nine rebounds, while also dishing out six assists. UConn improved its record to 15-2 overall, maintaining an undefeated 6-0 in Big East play. On the other hand, Georgetown fell to 8-8 with a 1-4 conference record. Notably, Khadee Hession shone for the Hoyas, putting up 22 points, with 14 of those coming in a strong first-half performance.
The game began with the Hoyas getting off to an impressive start, building an early eight-point lead in the first quarter. However, Fudd and the Huskies soon found their rhythm, overcoming the initial deficit. UConn’s ability to adapt was especially highlighted as they played their second consecutive game without standout guard Paige Bueckers, who is sidelined due to an ankle sprain.
A crucial moment in the game was a decisive 20-6 run by UConn that spanned the halftime break, allowing them to turn a 31-28 deficit into a 48-37 lead, capped off by a 3-pointer from Shade with 5:56 left in the third quarter. UConn utilized their three-point shooting effectively, nailing seven shots from beyond the arc in the second half, which propelled them to outscore Georgetown 35-22 after the intermission.
Hession had a standout performance for Georgetown, not only reaching her career-best points but also setting a personal best for three-pointers in the first half, finishing 6-for-8 from deep. The Hoyas, known for their shooting ability, entered the game averaging 6.9 made threes per match and managed to connect on 10 of their 26 attempts.
Looking ahead, UConn will complete its two-game road trip with a matchup against St. John’s in New York on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Georgetown will hit the road as well, kicking off a two-game trip with a contest against Butler on Tuesday night.
