ST. MORITZ, Switzerland — Janine Flock and Matt Weston are on the verge of securing their respective titles as season-long World Cup skeleton champions once again.
Flock, an experienced athlete from Austria, triumphed in a World Cup race held in St. Moritz on Friday, marking her second win of the season. This victory has significantly strengthened her position in the overall standings, with just one women’s race left in the season.
With a total of 1,390 points accumulated over seven races, Flock holds a 90-point advantage over her closest rival, Hannan Neise from Germany. To clinch her third overall championship title, Flock needs only to finish 11th or better in the upcoming final race scheduled for February 7 in Lillehammer, Norway.
Finishing just behind Flock was Belgium’s Kim Meylemans, who secured second place, while Brazil’s Nicole Rocha Silveira rounded out the podium in third. Kelly Curtis emerged as the top American participant, finishing in seventh place.
On the men’s side, Matt Weston also claimed victory on Friday, extending his lead in the overall standings. The British athlete requires merely a 15th place finish in the final race at Lillehammer to achieve his second consecutive overall title.
Weston currently leads his teammate, Marcus Wyatt, by 123 points, holding 1,480 against Wyatt’s 1,357. After Weston’s win, Germany’s Christopher Grotheer came in second, followed by Italy’s Amedeo Bagnis in third place. Austan Florian, who finished fifth, was the top performer among the U.S. men.
Germany’s duo of Jacqueline Pfeifer and Axel Jungk triumphed in the mixed team event, while the U.S. team’s Mystique Ro and Florian secured second place. The British team, consisting of Amelia Coltman and Weston, finished third.
In other news, Saturday’s scheduled women’s monobob race in St. Moritz has been canceled due to training complications. This event will now take place on January 24 at the same location.
Looking ahead, the bobsled two-man event is set to occur in St. Moritz on Saturday. Additionally, the luge competitions will feature women’s doubles, men’s singles, and men’s doubles at Altenberg, Germany, also on Saturday. The skeleton World Cup season finales for men, women, and mixed teams will take place on February 7 in Lillehammer, Norway.
