NAIROBI, Kenya — A small aircraft made an emergency landing on Friday in the coastal region of Malindi County, resulting in the deaths of three individuals on the ground, according to a local law enforcement official.
Among the deceased was a motorcycle taxi operator, who lost his life when the plane ignited upon impact in Kwachocha, a town located along the Malindi-Mombasa highway, as confirmed by Sub-County Police Commander Lucky Joski Mudavadi.
In addition to the taxi driver, two other casualties, which included a motorcycle rider and a female passenger, were struck by debris, specifically parts from the dislodged wings and tail of the aircraft, as it crashed into a nearby building.
The pilot and two student passengers managed to escape the aircraft prior to the crash and are currently receiving medical care for the injuries they sustained during their descent. Authorities are actively looking into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
The Kwachocha locality is adjacent to Malindi Airport, and its residents are embroiled in legal disputes concerning governmental plans to enlarge the airport, which have yet to be settled regarding land compensation.
Rashid Odhiambo, a local legislator representing the county assembly, spoke to the media, emphasizing that the incident highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures to be observed around the airport premises.
“Those responsible for managing the airport must ensure that safety protocols are adhered to in the surrounding areas, not just within the airport itself,” he stated.
