Sevilla has officially bolstered its squad by signing Swiss forward Rubén Vargas, as confirmed by the club on Friday. The move aims to provide much-needed reinforcement for a team that is currently struggling in the league standings.
Vargas makes the transition from German club Augsburg, where he had been playing since 2019. During his tenure in the Bundesliga, he accumulated a total of 23 goals across 161 matches, showcasing his capabilities as a forward.
The 26-year-old player, born of a Swiss mother and a Dominican father, has represented the Swiss national team on 50 occasions. He was an integral part of the squad at both the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the upcoming 2024 European Championship. Notably, at the Euro 2024 tournament, he delivered an outstanding performance in the round of 16, earning the man of the match award after scoring one goal and assisting another in a 2-0 victory against Italy.
Vargas’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Sevilla, who currently find themselves battling in the lower part of the league table, sitting in 14th place in the Spanish league. His experience at the international level and his previous club performance may provide the spark needed to help lift Sevilla’s fortunes in the ongoing season.
