Satou Sabally has announced her decision to transition away from the Dallas Wings after dedicating the initial five years of her WNBA career to the franchise.
The 26-year-old player shared her future plans during a media session for the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league, expressing her intention to play for a different team in the upcoming WNBA season, highlighting her status as one of the premier free agents available.
“I’ve expressed my gratitude to Dallas as they have made this place feel like home for me over the years,” said Sabally, who was selected second overall in the 2020 WNBA draft. “I’ve already played my last game with the Wings, and I’m collaborating with them to find my next destination.”
The German international made history by helping her national team qualify for the Olympics for the first time and mentioned the possibility of teaming up with her sister Nyara, who plays for the New York Liberty, “in the future.”
“I’m looking forward to free agency,” Sabally remarked, “I’m excited to communicate with players from across the league, especially since I have never been on another team. It’s an opportunity to learn about them on a personal level, along with understanding their approach to the game. I enjoy engaging in basketball discussions that involve a high basketball IQ, which will help me determine the best fit for my future.”
Her comments came shortly after the Dallas Wings unveiled Chris Koclanes as their new head coach. The team has the option to franchise tag Sabally and potentially trade her to another franchise.
“When I first informed them, the initial response was to try to retain me,” Sabally recalled about the Wings’ reaction. “However, I believe the most efficient approach is to work collaboratively with the player, recognize their aspirations, and find a solution that serves both parties.”
Wings general manager Curt Miller praised Sabally’s abilities during the introductory press conference. “You must acknowledge the incredible career she has had thus far. When she’s healthy, she is an elite player and a true game-changer,” he commented.
This past season, Sabally participated in only 15 games for the Wings as she prepared for the Olympic Games. Throughout her time with the Dallas franchise, she has maintained averages of 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.
