PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have finalized a one-year contract worth $3 million with left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson.
This agreement, reached on Thursday, is contingent upon Ferguson passing a physical exam.
The 28-year-old pitcher boasts a career record of 19 wins and 13 losses, along with five saves, and holds a 3.68 ERA over his tenure in 263 games with teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros.
Last season, he played for both the Yankees and Astros, finishing with a record of 1-4 and a 4.64 ERA.
The Pirates intend to expand Ferguson’s role during spring training to evaluate his potential as a member of their starting rotation.
Throughout his major league career, Ferguson has made 14 starts, primarily serving as an opener.
Notably, he made a few spot starts during his rookie year with the Dodgers in 2018, impressively pitching five innings against the San Francisco Giants in his second appearance.
Although Ferguson started as a pitcher, the Dodgers quickly transitioned him to the bullpen, where he has spent the majority of his professional time.
With a rotation primarily composed of right-handers, the Pirates are looking to add a left-handed option, particularly with the presence of promising young pitchers like Paul Skenes, the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year, along with Mitch Keller and Jared Jones.
