ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Marvin Mims Jr. began his tenure with the Denver Broncos primarily as a return specialist. However, his role has evolved significantly; he is now contributing as a receiver and even finding opportunities in the backfield.

The coaching staff is determined to maximize Mims’ impact on the field, using his quickness and agility to keep defenses on their toes. His multifaceted skill set has made him a pivotal asset for the playoff-bound Broncos, serving as a significant contributor on special teams and in the offensive scheme led by quarterback Bo Nix. “His versatility puts tremendous pressure on defenses,” said offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi as the Broncos prepared for their upcoming AFC wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills. “He is an exceptional talent, and needing to get creative for him has benefited us significantly.”

In his second season after playing at Oklahoma, Mims has been recognized for his prowess as a return specialist by earning a spot on the Pro Bowl team for the second consecutive year. Such distinction is rare; the only other player to achieve this milestone in their first two seasons with the Broncos is former star linebacker Von Miller, who is currently making waves with the Bills. “To be mentioned alongside him is truly an honor,” Mims remarked.

The Broncos have compared Mims to versatile players like Cordarrelle Patterson, who currently plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Sean Payton expressed satisfaction with Mims’ progress: “It’s been rewarding to see the expected growth for a second-year player. We immediately recognized his talents as a returner last season and have seen flashes of brilliance since.”

Understanding the need for a gradual approach to Mims’ development, the coaching staff has avoided overwhelming him too quickly. However, Mims feels prepared to embrace any challenge. “Mostly, it’s about memorization,” he said. “Being a playmaker is essential, and sometimes it’s just about adapting to what’s available in certain situations.”

This season, Mims has made significant contributions as a receiver, accumulating 39 catches for 503 yards and six touchdowns. Notably, he scored two touchdowns in the last two games, making a highlight-reel catch between defenders on a pivotal fourth down that helped secure an overtime thriller against Cincinnati.

In addition to his receiving stats, Mims has also taken on running back duties with 13 carries for 42 yards, but his standout performance remains in punt returns, where he leads the league with a phenomenal 15.7-yard average—marking the first time since 1982 that a Broncos player has led the NFL in this category.

“I thrive as a punt returner; it’s an area where big plays can happen,” Mims expressed, noting his seven kick returns, averaging 27.7 yards. One of his most exciting moments came against the Colts, where he nearly broke a punt return for a touchdown, sprinting 61 yards to set up a crucial go-ahead score during a game instrumental in securing the Broncos’ playoff berth after nine seasons.

“His contributions have been invaluable,” remarked special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica about Mims. “He continues to excel in the punt return game.” Mims’ ability to shift momentum is acknowledged by his teammates, including receiver Courtland Sutton. “Even a simple 10-yard gain can energize the entire team,” Sutton noted. “Watching him navigate the field is thrilling because he’s always a threat to score.”

In addition to his special teams duties, Mims has had standout receiving performances, including an eight-catch, two-touchdown showing against Cincinnati and a spectacular 93-yard TD catch from Nix in a win over Cleveland. “Those kinds of plays don’t come often, so they’re truly enjoyable,” Nix said.

As the Broncos prepare to face the Bills, Mims feels optimistic about the challenge ahead. “I’m confident in our current position,” he said. “Buffalo has had an impressive year and is deservedly the second seed. Playing against them will be tough, but I have faith in our team.”
