ROME — On Thursday, Pope Francis addressed ambassadors who are accredited to the Holy See, but he was unable to deliver his traditional annual foreign policy address due to health issues. Instead, he asked an aide to read the speech on his behalf.

The Pope, sounding congested, began his remarks by welcoming the ambassadors to the Hall of Blessings. However, only moments into his prepared speech, which typically reflects on the previous year’s significant events, the 88-year-old pontiff disclosed that he was still recovering from a cold and decided to hand over the presentation to an assistant.

Francis has a history of respiratory issues, having had part of one lung removed in his youth, which often results in him experiencing bronchitis during the winter months. This condition can leave him breathless and struggling to speak, especially in lengthy engagements. Recently, he has just completed a demanding Christmas season marked by the inauguration of the Vatican’s Holy Year celebrations.

Despite his cold and recent congestion, Pope Francis has managed to maintain a busy agenda and has continued fulfilling his commitments. His resilience in the face of health challenges remains evident as he endeavors to carry on with his duties.
