Musiala uncertain for Bayern Munich’s opening match of 2025 due to illness

MUNICH — Bayern Munich faces the possibility of missing its top attacking midfielder, Jamal Musiala, for the upcoming season opener due to illness. On Thursday, the club announced that Musiala has contracted the flu and will need to “take a break for the time being,” preventing him from participating in practice with the team as they prepare to face Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday in the Bundesliga.

This season, Musiala has been a significant contributor for Bayern, netting 14 goals and providing six assists in 22 matches across all competitions. His performance in the Bundesliga includes nine goals, which places him among the league’s top scorers, sharing the fourth spot.

In addition to Musiala’s situation, Bayern is also uncertain about who will take the goalkeeper position on Saturday. Daniel Peretz, who suffered a kidney injury during training on Wednesday, had been stepping in for the sidelined Manuel Neuer, who is recuperating from a broken rib sustained earlier. Peretz participated in a recent friendly match where Bayern secured a decisive 6-0 victory against Austrian team Salzburg on Monday, a game in which Neuer was absent from the roster. The club may consider longtime reserve keeper Sven Ulreich as a potential option as well.

Currently, Bayern Munich holds a four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table over last year’s champions, Bayer Leverkusen, who will compete against Borussia Dortmund on Friday.
