DENTON, Texas — In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, Atin Wright led the North Texas Mean Green to an 81-59 victory over the Rice Owls on Wednesday night.
Wright proved to be a standout performer, contributing 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including a solid 4 for 7 from beyond the arc, and perfect from the free-throw line with 3 of 3 shots made. Joining him in the scoring effort was Brenen Lorient, who added 19 points, shooting 5 of 8 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line while also grabbing five rebounds. Grant Newell rounded out the team’s notable performances with 10 points, shooting 3 for 4 overall and 2 for 3 from three-point range.
For the Owls, who now hold a record of 11-5 and 2-1 in the conference, Caden Powell was the leading scorer with 12 points. Trae Broadnax contributed 11 points along with four assists, while Jacob Dar added another 10 points to the team’s total.
North Texas seized the lead at 8:20 left in the first half and maintained their advantage throughout the contest. The halftime score stood at 42-28, largely due to Wright’s strong offensive performance. In the second half, North Texas extended their lead significantly, executing a notable 10-2 run that stretched their advantage from 10 to 18 points. They finished the game by outscoring Rice by eight points in the second frame, with Lorient leading the team by scoring 11 points in the latter period.
The Mean Green’s upcoming challenge is on Tuesday against East Carolina in an away game, while the Owls will be preparing to host Temple on Saturday.
