FAIRFAX, Va. – In a competitive matchup, Brayden O’Connor was instrumental for George Mason, contributing 16 points to help secure a 64-58 win against Richmond on Wednesday evening.
O’Connor’s shooting statistics included making 3 of his 10 attempts from the field, hitting 2 out of 7 from beyond the arc, and converting an impressive 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. Woody Newton also played a key role, scoring 15 points along with pulling down six rebounds. Darius Maddox added to the scoring with 10 points, shooting 3 of 8 overall and successfully making 3 free throws.
For the Spiders, Dusan Neskovic matched O’Connor’s output with 16 points. Apostolos Roumoglou contributed 11 points along with two steals, while Mike Walz chipped in with nine points and six rebounds, rounding out Richmond’s effort.
The game had its turning points, particularly in the first half where Newton recorded 13 of his points. George Mason entered halftime trailing 32-28. However, the Patriots reversed their fortune following a significant 13-0 run in the second half that turned a four-point deficit into a 41-32 advantage with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Maddox was particularly effective after halftime, scoring 10 points and bolstering the team’s lead as they fought for the victory.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to take the court again on Saturday. George Mason will host UMass, while Richmond will play against Rhode Island at home.
