The New York Jets have taken steps in their search for a new head coach by interviewing Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. The interview took place on Wednesday via video call, as teams with a bye during this playoff week can hold virtual interviews. These interviews are limited to three hours in duration.

Nagy has been a significant part of the Chiefs’ offense over the last two seasons, working with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. At 46 years old, Nagy brings head coaching experience to the table, having led the Chicago Bears to a 34-31 record over four seasons. Under his leadership, the Bears made playoff appearances twice, and he was notably honored as the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2018 after guiding the team to a 12-4 record and securing the NFC North division title. However, the Bears’ playoff run ended with a loss to Philadelphia in the wild-card round of the playoffs that same year.

Before his tenure with the Bears, Nagy was a member of the Chiefs’ coaching staff, initially serving as the quarterbacks coach from 2013 to 2015 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016. After parting ways with Chicago following the 2021 season, Nagy returned to the Chiefs in a senior assistant role and later took on the position of offensive coordinator in 2023.

Nagy is not the only candidate in the running for the Jets’ head coach position; he is the fourth known candidate to be interviewed. The Jets have previously met with Mike Vrabel, Ron Rivera, and Rex Ryan, and will likely also speak with Minnesota’s defensive coordinator Brian Flores and current Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

In addition to their coaching search, the Jets have also interviewed two candidates for their general manager position: Mike Borgonzi from the Chiefs and Alec Halaby from the Philadelphia Eagles. Overall, the Jets have spoken to six known GM candidates, including Jim Nagy, a Senior Bowl executive director, former Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff, ex-Titans GM Jon Robinson, and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick.

Borgonzi, who has been the Chiefs’ assistant GM since 2021 under Brett Veach, manages the team’s college and professional scouting efforts and contributes to roster construction. A former college football player at Brown, Borgonzi has held numerous roles within the Chiefs’ organization since his arrival in 2009, including a three-year stint as director of football operations before his promotion.

Halaby has served as the Eagles’ assistant general manager under Howie Roseman since 2022 and has experience in various roles at the organization since he was hired as an intern in 2007. A Harvard graduate, Halaby spent six years as the Eagles’ vice president of football operations and strategy prior to his ascent to assistant GM.

To assist in their coaching and GM searches, Jets owner Woody Johnson enlisted the expertise of The 33rd Team, a football analytics and consulting group established by former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum and ex-GMs Rick Spielman from the Dolphins and Vikings are aiding the Jets in identifying and vetting candidates and coordinating interviews for these crucial positions.
