Marlins pitcher Braxton Garrett sidelined for 2025 season due to elbow surgery

MIAMI — The Miami Marlins announced that pitcher Braxton Garrett, a left-handed thrower, will not participate in the 2025 season after undergoing a revision surgery that involved placing an internal brace on the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his throwing elbow.

The 27-year-old had a challenging 2024 season, during which he made only seven starts due to ongoing arm issues. His record stood at 2-2, with a 5.35 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 37 innings pitched.

Garrett began the previous season on the injured list due to a left shoulder impingement, delaying his debut until May 12. In June, he encountered further complications, suffering a left forearm flexor strain which ultimately curtailed his season after he faced setbacks following multiple rehabilitation outings.

He underwent the UCL surgery in December, following an injury-plagued year. Garrett was a first-round selection by the Marlins in 2016 and had his best performance in 2023, achieving a 9-7 record in a career-high 30 starts, completing 159 2/3 innings with a 3.66 ERA.

Garrett’s injury adds to a growing list of setbacks for the Marlins’ pitching rotation. Sandy Alcantara, the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, had Tommy John surgery in October 2023 to fix a torn ligament in his elbow, causing him to miss the entire 2024 season.

Despite these challenges, Marlins President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix expressed optimism that Alcantara would be ready for opening day when the Marlins take on the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 27.
