MILWAUKEE — In a thrilling comeback, Chase Ross delivered a personal best by scoring 27 points, leading the No. 7 Marquette Golden Eagles to a 74-66 victory over Georgetown on Tuesday evening. The Golden Eagles overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half to secure their fifth consecutive win, moving their season record to 14-2 and remaining undefeated in the Big East at 5-0.
Stevie Mitchell contributed 13 points, while David Joplin and Kam Jones tallied 12 and 11 points respectively for Marquette. Georgetown, having a strong season at 12-3 and 3-1 in the conference, saw Malik Mack lead their scoring with 18 points. Micah Peavy added 13 points, and Thomas Sorber and Caleb Williams dropped in 11 and 10 points respectively, with Sorber also grabbing 13 rebounds.
With this defeat, Georgetown’s impressive five-game winning streak came to an end. Tensions flared in the first half, resulting in technical fouls for Marquette’s Tre Norman and Georgetown’s Jordan Burks as both teams exchanged verbal disputes.
For Georgetown, the ongoing challenge against Marquette continues as they have now suffered seven consecutive losses to the Golden Eagles. On the other side, Marquette’s defensive prowess was evident with a remarkable 16 steals compared to Georgetown’s seven, and Ross showcased his skills with six steals. His steal followed by a dunk, along with two early second-half three-pointers, helped narrow Georgetown’s halftime edge of 38-29 to just one point early in the second half.
As the game progressed, the lead fluctuated frequently. With Marquette up by two points at 66-64, Ross came up big again, intercepting the ball from Mack and drawing a foul with less than a minute left on the clock. Ross calmly converted both free throws, bolstering Marquette’s lead and ultimately sealing the game from the foul line.
One noticeable statistic from the game was Georgetown’s strong shooting performance in the first half, where they managed to hit 57.7% of their shots, while Marquette struggled at 29%. However, the second half saw a turnaround, with Georgetown shooting 31% compared to Marquette’s improved 42.9%.
Next on Georgetown’s schedule is a match-up against UConn this Saturday, while Marquette is set to visit DePaul on January 14.
