North Dakota kicks off its legislative session featuring addresses and beverages served from a historic 115-year-old punchbowl.

BISMARCK, N.D. — The gathering of the North Dakota Legislature on Tuesday was enhanced not only by speeches but by a unique and historical attraction—a silver punchbowl that has graced the state for 115 years. This impressive 45-pound artifact, part of a 40-piece custom set originally commissioned for the USS North Dakota, was elegantly displayed under the watchful eyes of National Guardsmen as lawmakers began their sessions in Bismarck’s capital city.

Even Governor Kelly Armstrong’s mother, Connie, participated in the festivities by serving punch from the valuable vessel, humorously commenting on her careful handling of the precious item. “I’m trying not to touch it,” she chuckled, highlighting the special care taken with the artifact.

The fundraising initiative for this silver service dates back to the 1910s when North Dakota residents contributed $16,000, an amount equivalent to nearly $500,000 today. The elaborate design features intricate decorations that include bison heads and various agricultural symbols such as prairie roses, corn, and wheat. According to Lori Nohner, a research historian with the State Historical Society of North Dakota, the punchbowl represents a source of pride and heritage for the people of North Dakota.

The USS North Dakota was launched in 1908 and officially taken out of service in 1923, with the remarkable silver set returning to the state in 1926. Over time, the punchbowl, along with a pair of candelabra, has traditionally been used during significant events such as the opening of legislative sessions and gubernatorial inaugural ceremonies.

In preparation for such illustrious occasions, the silver pieces are carefully removed from their display cases and undergo a thorough cleaning. While a clear-coat treatment helps prevent tarnish, the interior of the punchbowl is still washed using mild soap and distilled water to maintain its pristine condition.

During the event, the punchbowl was secured in a large, padlocked box, which was meticulously transported to the Capitol’s grand hall by three National Guardsmen. Two staff members from the State Historical Society, equipped with gloves, gently unboxed the punchbowl, ensuring its delicate decorations were well protected. Throughout the event, additional guards kept a vigilant watch over the historic piece.

After the conclusion of the gathering, staff will use cotton swabs to meticulously cleanse any remnants of punch and document the condition of the punchbowl both before and after the event. Notably, the original ladle has unfortunately been broken and is no longer in use. Other items from the remarkable silver service include coffee urns, serving platters, cups, and even a humidor for cigars. A significant portion of this exquisite collection is typically exhibited at the Heritage Center in Bismarck, drawing interest from visitors and history enthusiasts alike.
