Elon Musk’s father, Errol Musk, recently revealed that his son has shown interest in purchasing the English football club Liverpool.
The Premier League team is currently held by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which has not publicly stated any intention to sell the club, although it has entertained outside investments before.
In an interview with Times Radio, Errol Musk confirmed that the Tesla CEO has aspirations regarding the prestigious six-time European Cup winners.
“Oh yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it,” he clarified, adding, “He would like to, yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I.”
He expressed uncertainty surrounding the subject, saying, “I can’t comment on that. They’ll raise the price.”
A representative from FSG, when approached for comment, dismissed the speculation as unfounded, stating there was “No truth to these rumors.”
In a notable update from September 2023, FSG sold a minority share to the U.S. investment firm Dynasty Equity, further indicating a strategy for long-term financial backing rather than a full sale.
During that announcement, Mike Gordon, president of FSG, reiterated their commitment to Liverpool by stating, “Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever. We have always said that if there is an investment partner that is right for Liverpool, then we would pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club’s long-term financial resiliency and future growth.”
Under FSG’s ownership, Liverpool has reestablished itself among Europe’s elite football clubs.
Recently, the Merseyside team clinched its first English league title in 30 years in 2020, following their Champions League triumph the previous season. Currently, the club is contending for both the Premier League and the Champions League titles this season.
Errol Musk also mentioned that they have family connections in Liverpool and fondly recalled knowing many members of the Beatles, who hailed from the area.
In addition to his interest in Liverpool, Elon Musk has been vocal about British politics, particularly following the recent election of the center-left Labour Party in July.
He has utilized his social media platform, X, to advocate for a new election.
On Monday, Labour Party leader Keir Starmer criticized what he termed “lies and misinformation” that have been undermining British democracy, countering a series of attacks directed at his government from Musk.
