Veteran reliever Chris Martin has officially returned to the Texas Rangers, signing a one-year deal with the team he previously played for in 2018 and 2019. This announcement was made on Monday evening, marking a noteworthy reunion for Martin, who hails from Arlington, Texas.
Last season, while playing for the Boston Red Sox, Martin showcased a solid performance, finishing with a 3-1 record and a 3.45 ERA over 45 relief appearances. He managed to strike out 50 batters in just 44 1/3 innings, and impressively, his three walks were the least among qualified relievers in Major League Baseball. Throughout his two years with the Red Sox, he maintained an impressive 2.16 ERA across 100 games.
At 38 years of age, Martin has compiled a career record of 16-18, accompanied by a 3.38 ERA and 14 saves in 369 games, all of which have been in relief roles. He launched his professional journey with the Colorado Rockies in 2014 and had a brief stint with the New York Yankees in 2015 before venturing to Japan prior to his first term with the Rangers.
In 2019, Texas traded Martin to the Atlanta Braves. He would later play for the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, before signing with the Red Sox during free agency.
To accommodate Martin on the Rangers’ major league roster, the team designated right-hander Matt Festa for assignment. Earlier on the same day, Texas made a trade, sending right-hander Owen White to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations.
