Golden Globes maintain consistent viewership at 10 million audience members
NEW YORK — The 82nd Golden Globes attracted an average audience of 10.1 million viewers across CBS and Paramount+, according to Dick Clark Productions on Monday. This figure is comparable to last year’s viewership for the event.

In contrast to the traditional metrics from Nielsen, CBS utilized ratings data from VideoAmp, as Paramount Global, the CBS parent company, is currently in a contractual disagreement with Nielsen. Maintaining a consistent audience size amidst the overall decline in traditional linear broadcasts is seen as a positive outcome for the ceremony hosted by Nikki Glaser. Last year’s show marked the first time the Globes aired on CBS, pulling in 9.4 million viewers, based on Nielsen’s statistics.

Historically, the Golden Globes attracted closer to 20 million television viewers before the onset of the pandemic. For instance, in 2020, the ceremony garnered an audience of 18.4 million.

The awards had faced potential cancellation two years prior, following a report by The Los Angeles Times that highlighted the lack of Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). This revelation led to a significant boycott from the industry, ultimately causing the 2022 Golden Globes to be excluded from broadcast. The following year, NBC aired the Globes but subsequently opted out from future broadcasts.

The 2024 ceremony also faced its share of criticism, with many describing Jo Koy’s hosting as disastrous. Nevertheless, the viewership saw an improvement, prompting CBS to secure a five-year agreement. Following various controversies, Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions acquired the awards, transitioning it into a for-profit entity.

The event, which coincided with NBC’s telecast of the Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions game, received favorable reviews for host Glaser. Major awards of the night were awarded to the Netflix musical “Emilia Perez” and the A24 film “The Brutalist.” On the television front, FX’s “Sh?gun” and Max’s “Hacks” were recognized as winners.
