IRONDALE, Ala. — On Monday, a police officer in Alabama lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while managing traffic outside a church.
The Irondale Police Department has confirmed that Lieutenant Mark Meadows, who was 60 years old, was on duty directing traffic at an intersection when a truck collided with him. He was promptly transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries, according to city officials.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Reports indicate that Meadows was hit by a pickup truck. The 32-year-old driver remained at the scene, but it is currently unclear if any charges will be filed against him.
“Irondale has lost a valued member of our community,” stated Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. “Lieutenant Mark Meadows dedicated over 30 years to serving our city. He was a man of few words but led by example, exemplifying what it means to be a true public servant.”
The unfortunate incident took place around 7 a.m. outside the Church of the Highlands, which was a busy location as it prepared to conclude its morning prayer services, as reported by various news outlets.
Irondale is a suburban area located roughly 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Birmingham.
