Louisiana Attorney General initiates security probe as Biden allocates support for New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS — Following a tragic incident on New Year’s Eve that resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has initiated an investigation into the safety and security measures in New Orleans. The incident involved an Army veteran who bypassed a police blockade and sped down Bourbon Street.

Murrill emphasized the necessity for clarity and accountability, stating, “The People of Louisiana deserve answers. We are committed to obtaining a comprehensive understanding of what was or wasn’t done and, more crucially, determining the necessary changes to prevent such events in the future.”

In response to the tragedy, President Joe Biden visited New Orleans to meet with victims’ families and first responders. He announced the deployment of additional federal resources aimed at assisting the city during significant upcoming events like Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl. These events have been designated a high-priority status, warranting substantial federal interagency aid, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

The incident was perpetrated by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a former U.S. Army member who expressed affiliation with the Islamic State group. He was fatally shot in an ensuing confrontation with law enforcement. Before the Super Bowl is hosted on February 9, the steel columns known as bollards, which had previously helped limit vehicle access to Bourbon Street, were being updated.

Murrill has tasked the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation with conducting a thorough review of the security plans for both New Year’s Eve and the Sugar Bowl. The investigation aims to examine every facet of planning and execution related to security measures for the incident on January 1. This includes reviewing existing security assessments and recommendations, analyzing funding sources, evaluating the use of state and federal funds, and assessing coordination among state, local, and federal entities.

City officials, including the New Orleans Chief of Police, the District Attorney, the Inspector General, and members of the City Council, have all expressed their commitment to fully support and cooperate with this investigation, as highlighted by Murrill.

Murrill expressed hope that the final report would equip law enforcement and the City of New Orleans with the necessary tools and insights to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.

The federal assistance that Biden has proposed could involve various forms of support, including explosive detection teams, K-9 units, cyber risk assessments, venue screenings, intelligence operations, and enhanced air security.

Jean-Pierre reiterated the administration’s commitment, stating, “The president prioritizes the safety and security of the American people. We will leave no stone unturned to investigate this horrific incident and ensure that the community has the necessary resources in the aftermath of this tragedy.”
