Pascal Jansen has been appointed as the new head coach of Major League Soccer’s New York City FC, signing a four-year deal to take the helm of the team. His hiring comes just a week after departing from Hungarian club Ferencvaros midway through their season.
At 51 years old, Jansen holds both Dutch and British citizenship. Before his tenure at Ferencvaros, he managed AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands from December 2020 until the previous January, showcasing his extensive coaching background. His appointment marks a significant milestone as he becomes the sixth head coach for NYCFC, which is gearing up for its 11th season in the league.
Jansen takes over the position following the dismissal of Nick Cushing, who was let go just three days after the team’s defeat to the New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Cushing’s dismissal added him to the list of previous coaches, which includes notable names such as Jason Kreis (2015), Patrick Vieira (2016-18), Dominique Torrent (2018-19), and Ronny Deila (2020-22).
In a related development, former Irish international Robbie Keane has been announced as Jansen’s successor at Ferencvaros, further highlighting the ongoing changes within the coaching staff of leading clubs in the football scene.
