ARLINGTON, Texas — Mike McCarthy has expressed a strong desire to continue as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Jerry Jones, the team’s owner, has hinted at McCarthy’s return but did not provide a clear statement regarding the coach’s future following the team’s 23-19 defeat against Washington, which concluded a disappointing 7-10 season.
“Mike is a highly skilled coach in my eyes. He was destined to coach in this organization. He hasn’t done anything to lessen my regard for his coaching abilities,” Jones remarked, adding, “I’m not sure I’m contemplating a change at this time.”
However, Jones did clarify that no decision has been made concerning an extension for McCarthy.
“That’s what we will focus on in the coming days and weeks,” he stated.
McCarthy’s contract is set to expire after five seasons, during which he led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances with records of 12-5 in each of those years. Unfortunately, the Cowboys had already been eliminated from playoff contention ahead of their final game against the Commanders, and the franchise has not advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs since their Super Bowl victories in the mid-1990s.
“I have confidence in my abilities as a head coach. However, I believe that the broader picture, including overall results and specifics on how to improve, is essential,” McCarthy commented. “These factors are crucial for decisions regarding hiring or future direction. For me, I strongly believe that Jerry and I are positioned to look ahead.”
He mentioned that he has yet to discuss the next steps with Jones but anticipates a meeting soon.
The Cowboys ended the season with key players such as quarterback Dak Prescott, leading receiver CeeDee Lamb, All-Pro guard Zack Martin, cornerback Trevon Diggs, and run-stopping defender DeMarcus Lawrence on injured reserve.
Micah Parsons missed four games during the season but still recorded his fourth consecutive season with over ten sacks, totaling twelve after two sacks in the game against the Commanders. His career sack total now stands at 52 1/2.
McCarthy boasts a 49-35 record in his tenure with the Cowboys and holds a cumulative record of 174-112-2 over 18 seasons as an NFL head coach, which includes his successful 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers where he won a Super Bowl — a game that occurred at AT&T Stadium 14 years ago.
When asked about his desire to return, McCarthy affirmed, “Absolutely, I want to stay here. I have invested so much into this organization, and they have also invested greatly in me.
When you commit your time, effort, belief, and develop relationships within this organization while understanding its potential and readiness to improve, you recognize all the positive aspects that factor into this mix.”
He emphasized his belief in team development and nurturing young talent but acknowledged the ultimate goal is winning.
“It’s critical to have the right elements in place to achieve our aspirations. I believe we have established a strong foundation for future success,” McCarthy concluded.
