Laczynski scores season opener, Hill makes 23 saves in Golden Knights’ 3-1 victory over Sabres

LAS VEGAS — Tanner Laczynski found the back of the net for the first time this season, contributing to the Vegas Golden Knights’ 3-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Adin Hill also played a crucial role, making 23 saves throughout the game.

With this win, the Golden Knights now lead the league with a total of 33 points, showcasing an impressive record of 16 wins, 3 losses, and 1 overtime loss since November 21. They seize the top position in the NHL standings, currently accumulating a total of 57 points after surpassing the Winnipeg Jets, who suffered a defeat against Detroit.

Mark Stone and Jack Eichel were also key contributors for Vegas, both netting goals in the match, while Tanner Pearson recorded two assists. For the Sabres, Jason Zucker scored their lone goal, and goaltender James Reimer made 30 stops. Unfortunately for Buffalo, this loss marked the third consecutive defeat while concluding a four-game road trip.

In terms of statistics, the Sabres arrived in Las Vegas boasting a three-game winning streak against the Golden Knights, with a prior scoring margin of 15-6 over their last three encounters. On the other hand, the Golden Knights have shown remarkable defensive strength during their recent stretch, allowing an average of just 2.20 goals per game in the last 20 games since November 21, with only two goals or fewer surrendered in 14 of those matchups.

A crucial moment in the game occurred early in the third period when the Sabres seemed to gain momentum. Rasmus Dahlin made a swift advance down the right side and unleashed a wrist shot aimed at the shoulder, but Hill’s agile glove hand intercepted the puck, thwarting any momentum for Buffalo.

Notably, Mark Stone’s goal on this occasion marked the 600th point of his career, making him the eighth-fastest active Canadian player to hit this milestone, according to NHL stats.

Looking ahead, the Sabres will host the Washington Capitals on Monday night, while the Golden Knights are set to face the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.
