Chiefs Leave Kansas City for Denver Following 4-Hour Tarmac Delay Due to Ice Storm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs have finally left Kansas City International Airport en route to their matchup against the Denver Broncos on Saturday after experiencing around four hours stuck on the tarmac due to an ice storm that affected the region prior to a forecasted blizzard.

The team attempted to adjust its flight schedule in light of the unfavorable weather conditions, which had been anticipated throughout the week. Unfortunately, their designated plane suffered delays in arrival, forcing them to keep their original mid-afternoon departure time. Just before the flight was set to leave, airport authorities announced a suspension of all flights due to the “rapid ice accumulation” on runways.

There was a small window of time between the initial ice coverage over Kansas City and the onset of heavy snowfall, which is expected to continue through Sunday. This brief pause allowed for the de-icing of the plane and the clearing of the runway, enabling the Chiefs to take off successfully. Their chartered aircraft was the first to take flight following the resumption of airport operations.

The Chiefs, currently holding a 15-1 record, have secured the top seed in the playoffs along with a bye in the first round, which means their regular-season finale holds little importance for them. However, the game bears significant stakes for Denver, as a victory would allow them to clinch a playoff position.

Earlier in the week, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid mentioned a strategy of resting star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, resulting in backup Carson Wentz stepping in as the starter. Additionally, the Chiefs have ruled out key players including right tackle Jawaan Taylor (due to a knee issue) and running back Isiah Pacheco (suffering from rib injuries). Other prominent athletes, like defensive tackle Chris Jones and tight end Travis Kelce, are also expected to be sidelined for this game.

As for the Chiefs, they will have to remain patient until they learn who their opponent will be in the playoffs. The earliest they are scheduled to play in the divisional round is January 18.
