SYDNEY — Elena Rybakina, currently ranked sixth in the world, has come to the defense of her former coach, Stefano Vukov, who is facing a provisional suspension from the WTA as the organization evaluates a possible violation of its code of conduct.
This week, Rybakina announced that Vukov would be rejoining her coaching staff, noting that the WTA’s suspension means he will not have access to certain areas designated for players, including practice courts and training facilities.
During a press conference in Sydney, the 2022 Wimbledon champion expressed her support for Vukov, stating, “He never mistreated me,” and acknowledging his significant role in her journey from being ranked No. 200 to achieving her current status. The 25-year-old player expressed her appreciation for his contributions throughout their collaboration.
Currently, Rybakina is working with Goran Ivanisevic as they gear up for the Australian Open. She emphasized her satisfaction with their training dynamic over the last few weeks, mentioning, “I’m happy with the way we are working now.” Despite the ongoing investigation, she is looking to incorporate Vukov back into her team, highlighting their six-year relationship and the potential for collaboration beyond the court.
Addressing the situation, Rybakina conveyed her disappointment with the surrounding comments, particularly from individuals within the tennis community, including active coaches and commentators. She believes that the backlash against Vukov is unjustified.
In response to the allegations, Vukov stated that he has “never abused anyone.” Meanwhile, the WTA confirmed Vukov’s provisional suspension in a statement, mentioning that it is part of an independent investigation concerning a breach of its conduct policy. They made it clear that Vukov is currently ineligible for a WTA credential and noted the necessity of addressing recent public comments that mischaracterize the ongoing circumstances.
The WTA refrained from providing further details about the investigation at this time.
