Strong Third Quarter Propels No. 12 Kansas State Women’s Team to 77-57 Victory Over Texas Tech with Contributions from Lee and Sundell

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Ayoka Lee contributed significantly with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Serena Sundell achieved a double-double as No. 12 Kansas State secured control of the game in the third quarter, ultimately defeating Texas Tech 77-57 on Saturday. This marked the Wildcats’ tenth consecutive victory.

Kansas State led by six points at halftime and opened the second half with a quick nine-point surge, featuring five points from Temira Poindexter and four from Lee. They subsequently went on a 10-0 scoring run, outpacing the Red Raiders with a remarkable 28-9 performance in the third quarter for a commanding 66-51 lead.

The Wildcats demonstrated impressive shooting, hitting 9 of their 16 attempts from the field and converting 8 of 10 free throws, while Texas Tech struggled, managing to make only 2 of 14 shots accompanied by 10 turnovers during the same period.

Sundell and Kennedy Taylor each scored 13 points for Kansas State (15-1, 3-0 Big 12 Conference), with Sundell also providing 11 assists to her teammates. Taryn Sides contributed 11 points as well. Notably, Lee has accumulated a total of 2,436 career points, putting her just five points away from entering the NCAA’s top 100 for all-time scoring.

For the Red Raiders (12-4, 1-2), Bailey Maupin was the standout player, scoring 21 points, while Jasmine Shavers and Maya Peat added 12 and 10 points respectively.

In the first quarter, Lee scored 11 points, helping the Wildcats establish a tight 20-16 lead. The Red Raiders briefly took the lead in the second quarter when Maupin hit a jumper that put them ahead 26-25. However, Kansas State quickly regained momentum and entered halftime with a robust 38-21 lead.

Although Texas Tech shot an impressive 54% during the first half, their performance plummeted to only 26% in the second half, resulting in 15 of their 24 total turnovers occurring during that period.

Looking ahead, Kansas State is set to travel to Utah for their next game on Wednesday, while Texas Tech will be at home facing off against No. 18 West Virginia.
