KENT, Ohio — In a competitive matchup on Saturday, Jermahri Hill propelled Ball State to a 75-67 victory over Kent State, scoring a total of 18 points.
Hill’s impressive performance was complemented by five rebounds and six assists, contributing significantly to the Cardinals’ efforts as they improved their record to 7-6 with their first Mid-American Conference win, bringing them to 1-0.
Mickey Pearson Jr. also made his mark, netting 14 points with an efficient shooting performance, hitting 4 of 6 field goals and converting 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. Pearson also contributed with nine rebounds.
Jeremiah Hernandez chipped in with 13 points, demonstrating consistency by finishing with 4 of 9 shooting from the field and going 4 for 6 from the free-throw line.
On the other hand, VonCameron Davis was the standout for the Golden Flashes, scoring 20 points and securing three steals.
Kent State’s Jamal Sumlin added 12 points, while Jalen Sullinger contributed 10 points, along with four assists and two steals, but their efforts were not enough to overcome Ball State’s performance.
The game saw Ball State close the first half with a surge, ending with a 10-0 run that allowed them to establish a 36-31 lead. Hill’s nine points in the first half were pivotal in setting the tone for the Cardinals.
In the second half, a pivotal layup by Payton Sparks with 7:17 left in the game put Ball State ahead 59-58, a lead they would not relinquish.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to continue their schedules on Tuesday; Ball State will host Miami (OH) while Kent State travels to face Northern Illinois.
