In Sigulda, Latvia, U.S. luge athletes Chevonne Forgan and Sophie Kirkby secured their third medal of the World Cup season in women’s doubles luge on Saturday, further advancing in the rankings. They achieved a second-place finish in a competitive race, just behind the leading duo from Austria, Selina Egle and Lara Kipp, who have been dominating the circuit with gold medals in their last three races.
Latvians Marta Robezniece and Kitija Bogdanova finished in third place. With four of the nine World Cup races completed this season, Egle and Kipp have amassed a total of 350 points, leading Forgan and Kirkby by 40 points in the overall standings.
In the women’s singles event, Latvian athlete Elina Bota triumphed in front of her home crowd. She managed to secure the win ahead of Germany’s Merle Fraebel and Austria’s Lisa Schulte, who finished second and third, respectively, just ahead of Latvia’s Kendija Aparjode.
The following three positions were filled by U.S. athletes, with Ashley Farquharson finishing in fifth, Emily Sweeney sixth, and Summer Britcher seventh. In the men’s doubles category, the German pair Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt added another victory to their impressive record, marking their 54th World Cup career win.
Latvia’s Martins Bots and Roberts Plume took second place, while Austria’s Yannick Mueller and Armin Frauscher rounded out the top three. The top U.S. men’s doubles team consisted of Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa, who placed eighth, just ahead of teammates Zach Di Gregorio and Sean Hollander.
In bobsled, German competitors showcased their dominance on home ground in Winterberg, claiming four medals out of six available. They swept the podium in the two-man race, with Francesco Friedrich and Alexander Schüller securing the gold. Adam Ammour and Benedikt Hertel won silver, while Johannes Lochner and Joshua Tasche took bronze. The U.S. team consisting of Frank Del Duca and Manteo Mitchell finished in 10th place.
German Lisa Buckwitz also excelled in the women’s monobob, achieving the fastest times in both runs and clinching her second victory of the season by narrowly edging out Switzerland’s Melanie Hasler. Australia’s Bree Walker finished third, while the highest U.S. finisher was Elana Meyers Taylor in seventh place.
In an exciting development, Lolo Jones, a versatile athlete who has represented the U.S. in both Summer and Winter Olympics, is set to make her comeback in the World Cup bobsled circuit. The 42-year-old will be pushing Elana Meyers Taylor’s sled during the women’s bobsled event on Sunday, marking her first World Cup appearance since November 28, 2021. Jones, known for her career in 100-meter hurdles, was also part of the U.S. Olympic track and field trials last year and previously made the Olympic bobsled team in 2014, boasting nine World Cup medals and assisting Kaillie Humphries in her 2021 world title run.
Looking ahead, the schedule includes the women’s bobsled and four-man races on Sunday at Winterberg, men’s singles and team relay in luge also on Sunday at Sigulda, and the World Cup for both men and women in skeleton on Friday in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
