LONDON — Luke Littler has ambitious aspirations to make history in the world of darts after recently becoming the youngest player to win the world championship at just 17 years old.
Following his impressive 7-3 victory over three-time champion Michael van Gerwen in the championship final, Littler has set his sights on breaking Phil Taylor’s legendary record of 16 world titles.
Taylor, recognized as one of the greatest players in the game’s history, holds the distinction of being the only individual to win the world championship more than five times. Despite his youth, Littler, who has already garnered attention for his exceptional talent, believes he has what it takes to surpass this monumental benchmark.
When reflecting on his goals, Littler expressed, “I want to add to it and potentially win even more. If I aim for the 16 titles, I genuinely think I can achieve that.”
He is aware of the long journey ahead. “Deep down, if I have the desire, with my skills, I’m confident I can accomplish a great deal. I recognize that I have plenty of time ahead of me,” he mentioned.
Given that Taylor was 29 years old when he clinched his first world title, Littler enjoys a notable advantage in his career trajectory.
“I might aim for Michael’s three titles and eventually Phil’s impressive 16,” Littler stated.
His goals are driven by a desire to be remembered among the all-time greats. “Achieving that will require numerous victories. Phil Taylor won a vast number of titles, and I’m well aware that Michael has over a hundred to his name. For me, the focus is on winning as many as possible,” he added.
