Soderblom makes 38 saves as Blackhawks break 5-game losing streak with 4-2 victory against Canadiens

CHICAGO — Arvid Soderblom was instrumental in the Chicago Blackhawks’ victory over the Montreal Canadiens, making 38 saves during the game. Nick Foligno contributed significantly by scoring two goals, helping the Blackhawks secure a 4-2 win and end a five-game losing streak on Friday night.

Tyler Bertuzzi pitched in with his team-leading 13th goal, while Patrick Maroon also found the net for the Blackhawks. This win marked a turnaround for the team after suffering a 6-2 defeat to St. Louis in the Winter Classic earlier in the week, which was part of a rough patch where they were outscored by a margin of 17 to 5 across three games.

For the Canadiens, Cole Caufield and Emil Heineman managed to score, with Sam Montembeault making 22 saves during the match. Even though Montreal led in shots on goal, outshooting Chicago 40-26, it was Soderblom’s performance that proved crucial to the Blackhawks’ success.

Bertuzzi opened the scoreboard just 3:21 into the game with a tap-in during a 5-on-3 power play, setting the tone early. However, Caufield equalized for the Canadiens with only 1:36 remaining in the first period, finding himself unchallenged at the side of the net and managing to score.

One noteworthy development for the Canadiens was that they suffered only their second loss in the last eight games.

For the Blackhawks, Colton Dach made his NHL debut, marking a family milestone as he is the younger brother of Canadiens forward Kirby Dach. During his debut, Colton logged 11 minutes and 5 seconds of ice time and recorded five hits, making it a memorable night for the Dach family, who had never faced off in a competitive game before.

A key moment in the game came during the second period, where Soderblom showcased his skills by stopping 19 shots, including some high-quality scoring opportunities from the Canadiens.

In terms of statistics, Caufield, who was a first-round pick in 2019, reached his 20-goal benchmark for the fourth consecutive season at just 24 years old.

Looking ahead, the Canadiens are set to wrap up a six-game road trip against Colorado on Saturday, while the Blackhawks will host the New York Rangers on Sunday.
