Bumrah, stepping in for the rested Rohit Sharma, was observed leaving the SCG grounds in a car approximately one hour after the lunch break on Saturday, as broadcasted on television.
The Indian team has yet to confirm whether the impressive performer of this series will be able to take to the field again, either to bowl or bat in India’s second innings.
His teammate, Prasidh Krishna, provided an update stating, “(He) has a back spasm. He went for scans and the medical team is monitoring him, so let’s see.”
The 31-year-old had bowled effectively during the first session, dismissing Marnus Labuschagne and adding to his wicket of Usman Khawaja from the preceding day without any apparent issues. He only managed one over after lunch before exiting the match with bowling figures of 2-33.
With Bumrah out of action, seasoned player Virat Kohli assumed the captaincy for India.
Bumrah did return to the SCG to support his teammates as India continued their second innings, which concluded the day with a score of 141-6, holding a 145-run lead heading into Day 3.
The 31-year-old has made a remarkable impact in the series so far, recording a total of 32 wickets, the highest by an Indian bowler in a single series on Australian soil. This achievement surpasses the previous record held by spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, who had claimed 31 wickets during the 1977-78 series.
