PHILADELPHIA — In an exciting college basketball matchup on Friday night, Jamal Mashburn Jr. led Temple University to a 91-85 victory over Wichita State, scoring a total of 24 points.
Mashburn was effective from the field, making 8 of 16 shots, which included 2 out of 5 from three-point range. He also excelled at the free-throw line, converting 6 out of 8 attempts. His strong performance supported the Owls’ record, bringing them to 9-5 overall and marking their first win in the American Athletic Conference at 1-0.
Elijah Gray contributed significantly with 15 points and five rebounds, while William Settle added 14 points, shooting 4 of 7 from the floor, including 2 for 3 from beyond the arc. Settle also collected nine rebounds to help his team’s effort in the game.
For Wichita State, Justin Hill was the star, scoring 25 points and providing five assists along with three steals. Xavier Bell added 18 points and made three steals of his own, while Corey Washington chipped in with 13 points.
The first half was tightly contested, with Mashburn scoring 13 points but Temple headed into halftime trailing 39-37. The game swung in Temple’s favor in the second half when they mounted a strong 15-2 run that transformed a one-point deficit into an 83-71 lead with just 2:38 left on the clock. Mashburn also played a critical role in the second half, adding 11 more points to secure the win.
Looking ahead, Temple will face East Carolina next Wednesday on the road, while Wichita State’s next game will be against South Florida at home on Monday.
