Luke Getsy Returns to Green Bay Packers Following Raiders Dismissal

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Luke Getsy has made his way back to the Green Bay Packers after parting ways with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he served as the offensive coordinator earlier this season. During his previous tenure with the Packers, spanning from 2014 to 2017 and then again from 2019 to 2021, Getsy held various roles, concluding as the quarterbacks coach on the staff of head coach Matt LaFleur. Under Getsy’s guidance, Aaron Rodgers clinched consecutive MVP titles in 2020 and 2021. Now, in a newly adopted role, Getsy is contributing by providing insights into the team’s defense.

During practice on Friday, Getsy was present as the Packers (11-5) geared up for their final regular-season game against the Chicago Bears (4-12). Prior to joining the Raiders, Getsy was the offensive coordinator for the Bears from 2022 to 2023. LaFleur expressed his appreciation for Getsy’s return, noting his extensive connections within the organization. “It’s nice to have him back in the mix,” LaFleur commented. “He’s well-regarded around here, and his relationships run deep. He brings a positive atmosphere, which is beneficial for all of us.”

Getsy’s departure from the Raiders occurred following a disappointing 41-24 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals, leading to his termination along with quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello and offensive line coach James Cregg on November 3. Despite his offensive coaching background, Getsy has taken on a different approach by focusing on the team’s defensive strategies, providing valuable insights that LaFleur has deemed helpful in recent weeks. “Getting a fresh perspective is always beneficial,” LaFleur noted, emphasizing the trust and value he places on Getsy’s insights.

This isn’t the first instance of LaFleur seeking assistance from former colleagues who have been let go. Earlier in the season, Robert Saleh, a former New York Jets coach, joined Packers practice in October just two weeks after his dismissal. Although chiefly a defensive coach, Saleh has been analyzing the Packers’ offense, sharing his feedback with LaFleur. Their friendship dates back to their time as graduate assistants at Central Michigan two decades ago, and they later collaborated while working as assistants for the Houston Texans from 2008-09.

In other news, the Packers issued their injury report on Friday, declaring cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee), safety Zayne Anderson (concussion), offensive tackle Andre Dillard (concussion), linebacker Quay Walker (ankle), and safety Evan Williams (quadricep) out for Sunday’s matchup. LaFleur had previously indicated that Alexander is not expected to return for the remainder of the season. Additionally, defensive lineman Brenton Cox Jr. (foot) and wide receiver Christian Watson (knee) were listed as questionable ahead of the game.
