RIO DE JANEIRO — On Friday, Brazilian Navy officials announced the discovery of the body of the 13th victim following the tragic collapse of a bridge in the northern region of the country last month. Currently, four individuals are still unaccounted for.

The unidentified body was located by drones scanning the depths of the Tocantins River. The incident occurred on December 22 when a segment of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, which connects two northern states, fell into the water.

Reports from local police, operating in the border region between Maranhao and Tocantins states, indicate that various vehicles, including four trucks, two cars, and two motorcycles, fell into the river due to the bridge’s sudden failure.

While authorities remain uncertain about the cause of the collapse, investigations are currently underway, involving police and Brazil’s road management department. The process of searching the river in this isolated area has been challenging and slow.

The bridge, which spans 533 meters (1,748 feet), links the cities of Estreito and Aguiarnopolis and was originally constructed in the 1960s. It is located approximately 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) north of Brasilia, the national capital.
