LYNCHBURG, Va. — In an intense matchup on Thursday night, Western Kentucky narrowly clinched a 71-70 victory over Liberty, thanks in large part to Julius Thedford. Thedford’s pivotal performance included 18 points, highlighted by a crucial 3-pointer that put his team ahead with just 32.2 seconds remaining in the game.

The Hilltoppers, now boasting a record of 10-4 and maintaining their position in Conference USA with a 1-0 standing, saw significant contributions from Tyrone Marshall, who tallied 12 points. Marshall showcased efficiency, connecting on 6 of 7 field goal attempts, though he struggled at the charity stripe, missing all his free throws. Additionally, Don McHenry also matched Marshall with 12 points, shooting 4 for 14 overall, including 1 for 4 from beyond the arc, while successfully converting all three of his free-throw attempts.

On the opposing side, the Flames of Liberty, who are now 12-2 and started their Conference play at 0-1, were led by Zach Cleveland. Cleveland delivered an impressive performance with 18 points, complemented by nine rebounds and four assists. Kaden Metheny chipped in 17 points along with two steals, while Owen Aquino posted a strong all-around game with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. This defeat marked the end of Liberty’s nine-game winning streak, highlighting the significance of the contest for both teams.

Western Kentucky found themselves at a disadvantage at halftime, trailing 35-21, but Thedford’s aggressive scoring in the second half turned the tide in their favor. His ability to lead the team in scoring during crucial moments proved essential for the Hilltoppers in clinching the hard-fought victory.
