DETROIT — Jaden Ivey, guard for the Detroit Pistons, recently underwent surgery on his left leg following a fibula fracture sustained during a game against the Orlando Magic. This incident occurred shortly after the Pistons secured a victory, and the team announced on Thursday that Ivey is set to be reevaluated in four weeks.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Ivey expressed his determination, stating, “I promise to come back even better. The recovery starts now #DetroitBasketball.” Ivey was selected by the Pistons as the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft and has been enjoying a standout season. He was averaging 17.6 points and 4.1 rebounds — both personal bests — along with four assists over the span of 30 games this season.
The injury occurred in a collision when Orlando’s Cole Anthony lost his footing while attempting to retrieve the ball, causing him to inadvertently collide with Ivey’s planted leg. The impact sent Ivey crashing to the ground, visibly in pain as he reached for his shin. The medical team swiftly came to his aid as concern filled the arena.
To shield Ivey from view during treatment, trainers raised towels, and players from both teams formed a protective circle around him. After an extended delay, he was safely transported off the court on a stretcher, with a towel concealing his injury.
Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff spoke on the incident, emphasizing the emotional toll it had on the team. He remarked, “It is tough for all of us. There’s no better person or teammate than J.I. and no one cares more about this than he does.” The entire Pistons organization is rallying in support of Ivey during this challenging time.
