French skier Sarrazin exits intensive care following head injury from accident

BORMIO, Italy — French skier Cyprien Sarrazin has moved out of intensive care following a serious head injury he incurred last week.

Sarrazin faced surgery to address a bleeding issue near his brain after he crashed while preparing for a World Cup downhill event in Bormio, Italy, last Friday.

On Thursday, the French Ski Federation announced on X that he is stable but will embark on a lengthy recovery and rehabilitation process, with the duration of his absence from the sport remaining uncertain.

The 30-year-old skier had won the downhill event on the Stelvio course in Bormio the previous year and underwent the operation at a nearby hospital in Sondalo immediately after his accident.

Although Sarrazin reported pain in his knee and foot, the federation confirmed that no further injuries were detected, despite the severity of the crash.

It was also mentioned that he is scheduled to return to France for admission to the neurosurgery unit at Medipole de Lyon.

Before his unfortunate incident, Sarrazin had recorded the fastest time during the first training session, but during the second run, he encountered a bump that caused him to lose control. He was propelled into the air and slid down the slope until he was halted by safety nets.

This course is slated to feature in the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics in just 14 months.
