WARSAW, Poland — Polish ski jumper Andrzej Stekala marked the beginning of the year with a heartfelt declaration about his identity and a tribute to his late partner, who passed away in November. The accomplished 29-year-old athlete made his announcement via a Facebook post, revealing that he had long kept his sexual orientation a secret due to concerns that it could negatively impact his career and personal life.

On Wednesday, Stekala expressed his desire for his supporters and the wider community to truly understand him, stating, “I want you to really get to know me. I’m gay.” He shared that the journey to disclose his truth was fraught with challenges, admitting, “For a long time I wondered if I would ever find the strength to write these words.” His vulnerability was evident as he reflected on living in fear and hiding who he is, fearing the repercussions of being open about his sexuality.

In addition to his personal revelation, Stekala took the opportunity to honor the memory of his partner, with whom he shared eight meaningful years. The outpouring of support from fans and fellow athletes on social media showcased a community rallying around him during this poignant time.

Stekala’s impressive athletic achievements include being part of the Polish team that secured bronze medals in ski jumping world championships held in Planica, Slovenia, and Oberstdorf, Germany, during 2020 and 2021. In 2021, he also succeeded in earning an individual bronze medal at a World Cup event in Zakopane, Poland. His recent announcement not only signifies a personal milestone but also a moment of pride for his supporters as he embraces his true self publicly.
