Rennes, France – Seko Fofana, the Ivory Coast midfielder, has finalized his move to French club Rennes with a long-term contract after a short stint in Saudi Arabia. The announcement was made on Wednesday.
At 29 years old, Fofana previously played a key role in helping Lens secure a second-place finish in Ligue 1 during the 2022-23 season, and Rennes is eager for him to have a similar positive impact on their squad.
The club revealed that Fofana committed to a four-and-a-half-year agreement, although specifics regarding the financial aspects of the deal have not been released. Currently, Rennes finds themselves in 12th position in the league standings.
Fofana expressed his belief in Rennes’ potential, stating, “There are some talented players at Rennes and I don’t think the club is where it should be. We’re going to get the chance to play a series of games and show that the start of the season was below the club’s potential. I hope we can turn things around very quickly.”
His record at Lens speaks for itself, where he netted 21 goals and provided 12 assists across 112 matches. In July 2023, Fofana signed with Al Nassr, the same team featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, but was subsequently loaned to Al-Ettifaq just six months into his contract.
Prior to his time in Saudi Arabia, Fofana spent four years playing for Udinese in Italy’s Serie A. On the international stage, he has earned 25 caps with the Ivory Coast national team and played a significant role in their triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations in February.
