The Chicago White Sox made a notable trade on Wednesday, acquiring left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies. In exchange, the White Sox sent minor league right-handed pitcher Aaron Combs to the Phillies. Last season, Gilbert had a commendable performance, posting a 3.24 ERA over six appearances in relief for the Phillies.
In order to accommodate Gilbert, the White Sox designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment. Shewmake, who recently joined the team following a trade with Atlanta in November 2023, struggled offensively, achieving a batting average of .125 by going 8 for 64 in his 29 appearances with Chicago.
The 23-year-old Combs was drafted by the White Sox in the eighth round of the 2024 amateur draft, coming from the University of Tennessee. During his time with Class A Kannapolis last season, he gave up two unearned runs across 7 2/3 innings in six relief outings.
Gilbert was placed on designated assignment by the Phillies after they traded for left-hander Jesús Luzardo from Miami on December 22. Standing at 6-foot-3, Gilbert has a career record of 2-7 and an ERA of 4.23 across 34 Major League games, having also played for Arizona. Last season, he mainly performed with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he finished with an impressive 4-0 record and a 2.25 ERA in 31 relief appearances.
