Gilgeous-Alexander nets 40 points to propel Thunder over Timberwolves 113-105

OKLAHOMA CITY — In an impressive performance, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 40 points, helping the Oklahoma City Thunder secure their seventh consecutive win by defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 113-105 on Tuesday evening.

Isaiah Hartenstein contributed significantly, adding 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while teammates Lu Dort and Jalen Williams chipped in with 14 points each. The Thunder, now boasting a record of 27-5, faced a 52-46 deficit at halftime but made a remarkable comeback, outscoring the Timberwolves 43-23 in the third quarter to pull ahead with a solid lead.

For Minnesota, Anthony Edwards was the standout player, leading the team with 20 points and seven rebounds. His two free throws late in the game cut the Thunder’s lead to 106-103. However, Gilgeous-Alexander responded effectively with a crucial three-pointer that brought his point total to 40 for the third time in five games, extending the lead to 109-103.

Naz Reid also played well for the Timberwolves, contributing 19 points, while Mike Conley added 16 points to their efforts. Despite their recent win streak, which included three consecutive victories, Minnesota struggled to maintain their edge in the second half.

Significant insights from the game include Minnesota’s initially strong performance, which faltered under the intense pressure of Oklahoma City’s defense in the latter stages, leading them to squander a previously comfortable 12-point lead.

On the other hand, the Thunder’s strong defense and playmaking from Gilgeous-Alexander kept them competitive until their shooters found their rhythm in the second half. A pivotal moment occurred when Mike Conley hit three straight three-pointers, giving Minnesota a 65-53 lead with 8:30 remaining in the third quarter. Yet, Oklahoma City then launched a stunning 36-10 run, closing the quarter with an 89-75 advantage, buoyed by Gilgeous-Alexander’s 19-point surge in that stretch.

A telling statistic highlighted that the Thunder forced 24 turnovers, including an impressive 16 steals, most of which came during the second half when they fought their way back into contention.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves are scheduled to host the Boston Celtics, while the Thunder will face off against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night.
