WASHINGTON – The nation is preparing to bid farewell to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. His funeral services will take place across Georgia and Washington, D.C., starting Saturday, January 4, and concluding on Thursday, January 9.
The events will unfold as outlined by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region, with all times set in Eastern Standard Time.
**SATURDAY, JANUARY 4**
The funeral proceedings will commence with the Carter family’s arrival at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, at 10:15 a.m. A solemn procession will follow, involving current and former Secret Service agents who will carry the late president’s remains to the hearse and accompany it as the motorcade leaves the medical facility.
The motorcade will briefly stop in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s hometown, at 10:50 a.m. for a moment of remembrance in front of his family’s farm, where the historic farm bell will toll 39 times to honor him. The journey will continue at 10:55 a.m. to Atlanta, with a scheduled pause at Georgia’s State Capitol at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence. Carter’s remains will then arrive at the Carter Presidential Center for an arrival ceremony at 3:45 p.m., followed by a service at 4 p.m. He will lie in repose starting at 7 p.m., allowing mourners to pay their respects.
**SUNDAY, JANUARY 5 – MONDAY, JANUARY 6**
Carter will continue to lie in repose during these days.
**TUESDAY, JANUARY 7**
At 9:30 a.m., Carter will leave the Carter Presidential Center for Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Georgia, where, at 10:40 a.m., the family will board Special Air Mission 39 for their flight to Washington, D.C. Upon arrival at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, at 12:45 p.m., a ceremonial transfer will take place, moving Carter’s remains into the hearse.
The family will participate in a motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial at 1:15 p.m., where Carter’s remains will be placed on a horse-drawn caisson for a funeral procession to the U.S. Capitol at 2 p.m. His remains will be carried into the Capitol Rotunda, where a service will be held at 3 p.m. for members of Congress to pay their respects. Carter will lie in state thereafter, with military honor guards present, allowing the public to pay tribute from 7 p.m. to midnight.
**WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8**
The public can continue to pay their respects as Carter lies in state.
**THURSDAY, JANUARY 9**
The final day will begin with Carter’s departure from the U.S. Capitol at 9 a.m. The motorcade will proceed to Washington National Cathedral for a brief ceremony at 9:30 a.m., followed by the National Funeral Service at 10 a.m. After the service concludes, the family will motorcade to Joint Base Andrews to board Special Air Mission 39 again at 11:45 a.m.
The aircraft will land at Lawson Army Airfield on Fort Moore, Georgia, at 2 p.m., where there will be a ceremonial transfer of Carter’s remains to the hearse. The final motorcade will take the family to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, arriving at 3:30 p.m., for a private funeral service starting at 3:45 p.m.
Following the service, the family will travel to the Carter residence for a private interment at 5:20 p.m. Those wishing to honor the late president can line the motorcade route as it passes through Plains. Prior to the interment, the U.S. Navy will perform a missing man formation flyover to commemorate Carter’s service in the Navy and his leadership as the commander-in-chief shortly after their arrival at the residence.
