Performance of Key US Stock Indexes on Monday, December 30, 2024

Wall Street experienced a downturn as the market appears to be concluding a strong year on an unfavorable note.
The S&P 500 ended the day down by 1.1% on Monday. As the year draws to a close, the benchmark index is still poised to record its second consecutive yearly gain exceeding 20%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 1%, while the Nasdaq composite saw a decline of 1.2%.

The dip in major technology stocks, including Apple and Microsoft, significantly impacted the overall market performance. Additionally, Boeing shares took a hit after one of its aircraft skidded off a runway in South Korea, resulting in the tragic deaths of 179 out of 181 individuals onboard.

On Monday, the S&P 500 dropped by 63.90 points, or 1.1%, bringing its value to 5,906.94.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 418.48 points, or 1%, settling at 42,573.73.
The Nasdaq composite experienced a decline of 235.25 points, or 1.2%, closing at 19,486.78.
Meanwhile, the Russell 2000 index, which represents smaller companies, fell by 16.81 points, or 0.7%, to reach 2,227.78.

Looking at the annual performance:
The S&P 500 has increased by 1,137.11 points, translating to a 23.8% gain.
The Dow has risen by 4,884.19 points, amounting to a 13% increase.
The Nasdaq’s growth stands at 4,475.43 points, or 29.8%.
Lastly, the Russell 2000 has seen an uptick of 200.70 points, equating to a 9.9% rise over the year.
